Heatwave alert published on April 13 across the country

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has published an alert of heat waves, providing for a strong increase in temperatures across the country from April 13, due to a high pressure system developing in the upper atmosphere.

The southern regions – including the Sindh, the South of Punjab and Balutchistan – should undergo serious heat conditions from April 14, with daytime temperatures likely to rise to 6 to 8 ° C above normal until April 18.

In the northern parts and power plants of the country-including Islamabad, superior and central Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Cashmere-Temperatures should increase by 4-6 ° C above normal. Night temperatures should also remain unusually high during the same period.

Excessive heat could trigger dust and wind storms, posing risks for infrastructure such as electric posts, trees, vehicles and solar panels.

The authorities have urged the public, especially children, women and the elderly, to avoid sun exposure and to remain hydrated. Farmers are advised to adjust crop management practices, in particular wheat harvest and to ensure the protection of livestock.

The Met Office also warned that the rise in temperatures could accelerate snow melting in the northern regions, increasing the risk of flooding between April 14 and 18. The relevant departments were placed on high alert to monitor the conditions and take preventive measures.
