A former Meta Executive recently spoke before the American Congress, accusing Facebook and his CEO of having allegedly proposed sensitive data on American citizens to the Chinese government, in exchange for being authorized to operate in the country.
As indicated by The registerSarah Wynn-Williams, former director of Facebook’s public policy, spoke before the Senate’s Judicial Committee’s Sub-Comeding on Crime and Counter-Terrorism this week.
During the hearing, she alleged that for her former employer, there was “no bridge too far” to enter the Chinese market, and that he would do everything to have access to 1.4 billion people who live there, in particular by offering data on the Americans to the Chinese Communist Party.
AI and censorship
“The only reason why China does not currently have access to data from American users via this pipeline is that Congress has intervened,” she was quoted.
Facebook criticized his testimony, the appellant “divorced from reality and riddled with false claims”, ” The register said, quoting Meta spokesperson Ryan Daniels.
“While Mark Zuckerberg himself was public about our interest in offering our services in China and the details have been largely reported from more than ten years, the fact is as follows: we do not abandon our services in China today,” added the spokesperson.
Wynn-Williams did not stop there either. She also allegedly alleged that Meta had contributed to the progress of China in artificial intelligence, because her Llama AI models were “openly available” in the country. There were even Military Applications of AI. Finally, she also alleged that meta-collaboration with the Chinese Communist Party in the development of censorship tools, then lied about this in the public.
Some senators have congratulated the testimony of Wynn-Williams and the fact that the complaints filed with the SEC and the United States Ministry of Justice after leaving the social media sector. They commented that Facebook was afraid that the truth was coming out and that they will stop nothing to prevent Wynn-Williams from testifying.
