- Reddit Poll Shows Significant Support for Garmin’s MIP Display Technology

These days, the best Garmin watches are gradually moving away from Memory In-Pixel (MIP) technology for their displays, with the company preferring AMOLED displays for their increased brightness and contrast. MIP screens are almost relegated to solar watches. But not everyone is happy with this decision, and a recent user survey suggests that many Garmin fans would be sad to see MIP go – and now we want to know if you feel the same.
On Reddit, user Imthenewbee created a poll titled “MIP Lovers: What would you do when Garmin stopped making MIP screen watches?” » With over 1,100, the results might surprise you.
Indeed, they show that a significant number of respondents want to continue using a MIP smartwatch, whether from Garmin or another brand. Of the 1,100 votes cast at the time of writing, 186 said they would buy a used Garmin MIP watch if the company discontinued its MIP devices, while 377 – or 34% – said they would upgrade to another MIP smartwatch. Together, these 563 votes represent 51% of the total votes cast, representing a significant coterie of Garmin users who want to stick with MIP displays.

Users say they ‘won’t be loyal’
For several Reddit users, the long battery life afforded by MIP displays is the reason for their preference. One user said “The MIP and poor battery life is why I went to Garmin. I won’t settle for an AMOLED with 12 day battery life.” Another, meanwhile, explained that they “went with Garmin because of the MIP and battery life. They won’t be loyal if the Garmin advantage disappears.”
It might be worth taking the Reddit poll results with a grain of salt. After all, the survey title specifically asked “MIP enthusiasts” to respond, so the results could be biased toward users who prefer the technology. You never know, our survey above could be more balanced!
Interestingly, however, many users have indicated a fondness for MIP. While this type of screen is nowhere near as bright as what you get with AMOLED (which means it’s not as useful in bright outdoor conditions), it’s much more efficient on your battery, helping you squeeze more juice out of your smartwatch in the long run.
And because MIP is less advanced than AMOLED, the cost of wearable devices with this technology tends to be lower than their AMOLED counterparts. This makes it a great option for some of the most budget-friendly smartwatches that give you wearable technology without breaking the bank.
We wouldn’t be surprised to see Garmin phase out its MIP watches as AMOLED displays become more efficient and consume less of your battery. But as the Reddit poll suggests, this could lead many people to lament Garmin’s decision.
