- Microsoft’s Xbox Mode still not appearing for some Windows 11 users
- The console-style UI arrived via the April 30 update and the latest May update.
- Currently it is only available in select markets
Microsoft began rolling out Xbox Mode to Windows 11 users on April 30 via an optional update, but it still isn’t showing up for some users for several reasons.
As Windows Latest reports, Microsoft has warned Windows 11 users that Xbox Mode may not yet appear for all users, even after the latest May 2026 update (KB5089549), as the feature is currently locked in some markets.
This was briefly noted in the original blog post, where the rollout was announced, but it also explains why users like me still don’t have access to the console-style UI through the latest update, which includes the optional April 30 update features.
Windows Latest also points out that Microsoft uses controlled feature deployment (CFR), meaning that the code for Xbox Mode is actually on users’ PCs, but remains inactive, requiring Microsoft to enable the feature via a server-side switch.
Essentially, Microsoft is doing this to keep an eye out for issues like bugs or crashes, before enabling the feature for more PC users – and given Windows 11’s history of bugs and frustrating issues, it’s a good move, but it will require more patience from users.
However, some may get lucky and be able to find the mode via Settings > Games > Xbox Mode (or it may be labeled ‘Full screen experience‘) then check the “Enable Xbox mode” box. You’ll finally have the ability to easily switch between Xbox Mode and the standard Windows 11 desktop.
For gamers using TVs or avoiding a mouse and keyboard, Xbox Mode is ideal because it offers the same browsing experience available on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X handheld, while also allowing Microsoft to compete with Valve’s SteamOS gaming mode.
Once the rollout is complete, Microsoft will need to deliver consistent updates to match SteamOS for gaming, or struggle to convince fans, given Valve’s frequent update activity.
