Pakistan on Thursday reaffirmed its support for Libya’s sovereignty and a Libyan-led political process as the only viable path to lasting peace and stability, according to a statement delivered at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

Speaking at the UN Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said: “For Pakistan, Libya is a brotherly country, and we remain steadfast in our support for its sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity. »

He welcomed recent political and security developments in Libya, while warning that significant challenges remain, notably in reaching consensus on electoral arrangements.

Highlighting Pakistan’s position on the political process, he said: “A Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process is the only viable path to lasting peace and stability. » He added that Pakistan supports UNSMIL’s ongoing efforts, including a structured dialogue aimed at bridging institutional divides.

On security, Pakistan welcomed what it described as “relative calm” in and around Tripoli, calling for continued engagement among Libyan stakeholders to advance security sector reform and unify military institutions across the country.

Highlighting progress in the judicial and economic fields, the envoy noted efforts by Libya’s legal institutions to preserve judicial unity, as well as a recent agreement on a unified spending framework, which he said could support long-term economic stability.

Regarding the sanctions, Ahmad emphasized their objective, saying: “The sanctions measures, particularly the freezing of assets, are not punitive. Their main objective is to safeguard Libya’s resources for the benefit of its people at a later stage.”

Pakistan reiterated its commitment to working with international partners to support “a stable, secure and united Libya”.
