The new film, directed by Georgia Oakley, is the eighth adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel since 1971, across all media worldwide. However, fans of the book are already worried that the new film won’t live up to one version in particular: the 1995 film led by Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson.
“Useless,” read one fan’s comment on YouTube, with another agreeing, “it’s going to be very hard to top Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson’s.”
A third added on
While fans are already divided on the impact of Oakley’s take on the classic book, we’re potentially forgetting the most crucial casting of the bunch: Caitríona Balfe.

Look on it
We’ve all been so busy talking about Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor Dashwood that we’ve completely overlooked the inspiration for a piece of Caitríona Balfe’s casting.
THE Stranger The star will play Mrs. Dashwood, originally played by Gemma Jones in the 1995 film. Balfe is no stranger to creating gripping historical romances, having starred as Claire on the hit Starz series since 2014.
Frankly, she’s the perfect person to play in a Jane Austen remake that is so visibly divisive. The new film will need as many steady hands as possible to fend off the “There was no point in making this movie” brigade, especially if the idea is to present something completely different.
As for the trailer above, we can expect traditional period drama vibes throughout. Universal Pictures describes the adaptation as “an irresistible new take on Jane Austen’s iconic film.” Senses and sensitivity: a charming, witty and deeply relevant story of love and brotherhood.”
