Worried about keeping your wine at the optimal temperature this summer — and also worried about style? Smeg has launched a new range of undercounter wine coolers that bridge the gap between its built-in and column wine coolers. These have a capacity of 21 and 78 bottles respectively; the new undercounter coolers have a capacity of 38 bottles.
The new range includes three models: the Classic, in stainless steel and available with a choice of right or left opening, and the Linea, which is right-handed and available in matt Neptune gray. All three models are available now.
As you’d expect from Smeg (which produces many of the best coffee makers we’ve tested over the years), these are premium products with stylish designs, although the themes here are classic and professional rather than the bright colors of Smeg’s instantly recognizable small appliances and fridges, such as the toaster, juicer, kettle and stand mixer I have in my kitchen. These coolers are designed to integrate with the company’s Professional Collection and Linea Neptune Gray Collection.
SMEG under-counter wine cellars: main characteristics and prices
All three models have the same features. They are lit internally by LEDs and have anti-UV glass to prevent the sun from spoiling your Sauvignon, and the air inside is filtered by activated carbon. The compressor is low vibration, which SMEG says is necessary to prevent long-term vibration from compromising wine quality.
The coolers support bottles of various sizes and feature telescoping sliding guides for easy extraction. There are three removable shelves and two fixed ones, all made of wood.
Temperature control is via a built-in touchscreen and there are two temperature zones for temperatures from 41F to 68F / 5C to 20C.
As you’d expect, you can expect the new models to be quite expensive: some US retailers have them priced at $3,999, while in the UK I’m seeing an RRP of £2,929. This represents approximately AU$5,497.
