- We Are Rewind’s WE-001 Cassette Player Gets Limited Edition The Dark Side of the Moon with Custom Design
- Includes first cassette version of the remastered 50th anniversary edition of the album in the box
- Available today for $199 / £159 (around U$310)
Every once in a while I get an email about a product being launched that makes me go “Oh damn!” out loud. And seeing the first images of the new version of We Are Rewind from his Pink Floyd-colored cassette player was one of those occasions.
The limited edition “Pink Floyd The hidden side of the Moon images on the front (with a Pink Floyd logo on the back), but it also comes with a certificate and a cassette version of Dark side in the box.
The cassette is particularly interesting, as it is the first time the 50th anniversary remaster of the album has been available on cassette – and may well be the only time.
Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason joked: “I still have my Nakamichi on the shelf and can’t wait to test it with the new one.” The hidden side of the Moon cassette. Am I correct in assuming that the next major problem will be The hidden side of the Moon in a large package consisting of the album divided into 78 rpm discs?”
I already have a WE-001 sitting on my shelf at home, next to my amp, and yet I find myself extremely I’m still tempted to choose this new version.
The WE-001 player is a modernized cassette player, with a cool aluminum design, supporting Bluetooth 5.1 as well as an audio jack for wired headphones. A release from We Are Rewind says there’s a “unique headphone amplifier designed for cassette playback” – and it sounds great, I have to say, but if you collect vintage cassettes, the quality can vary more depending on the cassette than what’s inside the player.
What’s even nicer is that if you want to get back to mixtape culture (and I do! I’ve written about wishing streaming services offered more options for this in playlists), there’s online input – so you can record to tape from another player.
But my desire for this version isn’t really about what the player can do or what it looks like. I just want this thing on my shelf.
If you feel the same way, it’s available to buy now (while it lasts) for $199/£159 (around U$310). The non-Floyd version of the WE-001 costs $159 / £129 / AU$269.
If progressive rock isn’t your thing, you might also be interested in another special edition of We Are Rewind with enough a different look: the jewel-encrusted Duran Duran version.
