Tom Cruise gave Christopher Nolan The Odyssey his enthusiastic seal of approval, taking to social media after an early screening to declare that he can’t wait to see it again.
The mission: impossible The star posted a photo of himself holding a ticket in front of a 70mm IMAX theater, speaking directly to the filmmaker and his production partner.
“Wow! To Chris, Emma and ALL your brilliant cast and crew. Thank you for an incredible evening in a movie theater. I can’t wait to see it again!” he wrote.
The endorsement carries weight from Cruise, who is one of Hollywood’s most vocal champions of the theatrical experience.
He held back Top Gun: Maverick throughout the pandemic rather than streaming it, a decision that proved spectacular as the film grossed nearly $1.5 billion worldwide.
Steven Spielberg later told Cruise: “You saved Hollywood’s success, and you might have saved theatrical distribution. Seriously, Nonconformist could have saved the entire theater industry. ยป
Cruise has since made a habit of publicly supporting other filmmakers’ cinema releases, promoting everything from Nolan’s film Principle And Oppenheimer has Sinners And Disclosure day.
Although the two have never worked together, Cruise and Nolan share a deep commitment to the big screen experience, and The Odyssey represents the most complete expression of Nolan’s theatrical ambitions to date, being the first feature film ever shot entirely with 70mm IMAX cameras.
The film officially opens Friday.
