The first round of the 2026 US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was hit by an unexpected disruption.
The match was delayed when heavy fog set in, forcing officials to suspend the match after 30 minutes of the opening tee shot.
The horn sounded at 7:05 a.m. ET and all activity ceased as conditions became much harder to see. It turned out that only 14 players out of 156 were able to complete a hole at the time of the break, and there was not even a single birdie on the scoreboard.
Play resumed at 9:05 a.m. ET after a precise two-hour delay. The US Open’s X account announced the restart, specifying that the practice courts were open in the morning.
Despite the resumption of play, golfers still face challenges. The National Weather Service indicated a 40% chance of possible precipitation and thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 30 mph.
The last time the first round of the US Open was postponed due to foggy weather was in 2021 at Torrey Pines, and the delay lasted 90 minutes. Friday will feature clouds giving way to clear skies, while Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny with winds ranging from 10 to 20 mph.
