The U.S. Commerce Department would have more power to protect domestic artificial intelligence technology from foreign adversaries’ supply chains in a bill introduced Tuesday by two Republican senators who have been at the center of crypto legislation this session of Congress: Tim Scott and Bill Hagerty.
The new bill would give Commerce the ability to block “transactions involving technology designed, developed, manufactured or provided by persons owned, controlled or directed by foreign enemy countries.” But he’s being pushed by both Republicans as this session of Congress draws closer to the summer recess and midterm elections, leaving him with little chance of moving forward unless he clings to a must-pass bill later.
“Americans should not have to worry that China or Russia could use the technology in our cars, our phones or our networks against us,” said Scott, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, who worked with Hagerty to pass the Guiding and Establishing National Innovation for American Stablecoins (GENIUS) Act last year.
