Spain have received a major fitness boost ahead of the 2026 World Cup with the return of Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams to full training.
The dynamic duo was widely doubted for the tournament opener, but their presence at the team’s base camp suggests they are ready for the big stage.
Red Fury duo back in action
Yamal and Williams returned to full training with Spain on Thursday at the team’s base camp in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The news comes as a huge relief to head coach Luis de la Fuente, who was sweating over the fitness of his two most explosive players just days before the tournament began.
Yamal, Williams and Victor Munoz all missed the final warm-up friendly against Peru on Monday due to injuries. While the rest of the team traveled for this match, the trio remained at the team’s training base to undergo intensive rehabilitation programs to ensure they could come to the tournament properly prepared.
Yamal overcomes hamstring issues

Of particular concern has been Barcelona star Yamal, who has not played a competitive match since April 22 due to a left hamstring injury. The 18-year-old is seen as a vital part of Spain’s attacking philosophy, and his prolonged absence had led to fears he could miss the group stages entirely.
However, the outlook is now much more positive. The Spain manager said last week he expected Yamal to be “ready to play” in Spain’s opening World Cup match, while admitting the Barcelona winger’s involvement could be limited to “just a few minutes”. Even a brief appearance would be welcomed by the Spanish faithful as they look to build momentum early on.
Team morale up
The return of the star duo was greeted with good humor within the camp as the European champions finalized their preparations. Teammates celebrated Yamal and Williams’ recovery by inviting them to take on the challenge at the start of Thursday’s practice session. The upbeat atmosphere continued as goalkeeper Unai Simon followed them to celebrate his birthday.
With the return of Yamal and Williams, Spain can now focus on the tactical nuances needed for their Group H campaign. The team’s mix of youth and experience has made them one of the pre-tournament favorites, and having the full complement of their attacking talents at their disposal significantly strengthens that claim.
On the road to World Cup glory

The European champions will face Cape Verde in Atlanta on June 15 as they begin their quest for a second World Cup title. This is a game Spain should win, but the presence of Williams and Yamal adds a layer of unpredictability that the Cape Verdean defense will struggle to contain.
The journey to the group stage will not be without challenges. After Cape Verde, Spain faces Saudi Arabia on June 21 in Atlanta and Uruguay on June 26 in Guadalajara, Mexico. De la Fuente hopes Yamal and Williams can use the opening match to find their rhythm ahead of the high-stakes clash against the South Americans.
